Hate crime laws violate the 1st Amendment

ReasonAn Iowa man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Wednesday for stealing and burning a church's rainbow LGBT pride flag.

Read the whole thing; the situation is not as simple as a 15 year term for stealing and burning a flag. But I strongly believe that the hate crime elements here violate the 1st Amendment. Stealing the flag was a crime and should be punished. Burning the flag (someone else's property) likewise. But the resulting punishment here is way out of proportion.
