School censors more than just a yearbook photo

The 17-year-old sportsman ? ready to take on the school system in court over its rejection of a photo for the yearbook in which his broken-open shotgun rests on his shoulder ? said he does not belong to a single club.

In past years, he said, assistant principals and teachers confiscated his gun magazines during his lunch periods.

Recently, Londonderry school officials nixed the avid sports shooter?s submitted senior yearbook picture, in which a smiling Douglass has a Ruger Red Label shotgun slung over his shoulder.

Elefante agreed with Juster?s assessment, also labeling the photo ?inappropriate.? He cited the district?s no-tolerance policy on violence, drugs and alcohol.

It sounds like this is a long-running conflict that has finally reached the point of a lawsuit. Good luck, kid. Give 'em hell.

School Confiscates Gun Magazines

Guns & Ammo, the new pornography. (I have no idea if this was among the magazines in question.) In yet another example of zero tolerance ... I was about to write "going to the point of absurdity", but that's where it starts out, so what was I thinking? I first came across this story at The Claire Files Board. There's a high-school student whose hobby is shooting trap. It's a completely non-violent and non-threatening sport. It's also quite challenging. I played football in high-school. Believe me, trap shooting is a lot less violent. So the kid submits, for his senior picture in the yearbook, a photo of himself with his shotgun. (Article with pic. Teen fights for right to pose with shotgun) Well, TriggerFinger has some backstory. Quoting from The Union LeaderIn past years, he said, assistant principals and teachers confiscated his gun magazines during his lunch periods.Nothing here but pure, ignorant fear. And it's this sort of fear that's being passed on to kids in public schools with these asinine zero-tolerance policies. No opportunity to learn even the first thing about guns, except for what the kids see on TV cop/crime shows, and the movies. Any positive depiction of the shooting sports is verboten, under the guise of, I guess, "protecting" children from violence. Well, this issue isn't going away. In fact, it looks as if it's going to court, and surprise of surprises,The National Rifle Association is supporting Douglass. [Douglass? lawyer, Penny] Dean said the American Civil Liberties Union is also likely to back her client. The ACLU? I'm shocked. But not as shocked as those school adminstrators will be when Douglass prevails in court.
