It's not really mandatory. Gun control advocates, criminals, and the disabled are specifically excluded, and there's no penalty for failing to comply.
It's an interesting political and crime control statement. I wouldn't support a law that actually had enforcement provisions, though. Maybe if we could make owning a militia rifle a condition of citizenship... |
A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said. Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown around 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said.We live in a scary world. But then, we've always known that; nature is red of tooth and claw. If we are going to take children away from their parents for 8 hours a day -- and we seem determined to keep doing that -- the least we can do is make sure someone is on hand to respond to incidents effectively. |

"We are very concerned about this proposed legislation," said Alice Johnson, Director of Georgians For Gun Safety. "Common sense and a need to improve public safety would indicate to most people that it is unwise to limit law enforcement when they suspect that firearms may be illegally maintained or transported in a vehicle. It's hard to believe that with all the other priorities in our state, including shrinking budgets, poor education, critical water issues and clogged transportation that some legislators would feel that an 'over the top' gun bill like this is a priority," she added.
Horror of horrors, the police might not find a weapon that hasn't been used to hurt anyone. It's shocking |

The Atlanta Police Department routinely places under surveillance anti-war protesters and others exercising their free-speech rights to demonstrate, police officials acknowledged this week.
While the APD denies the taping is akin to spying, demonstrators, civil libertarians and some elected officials disagree and demand that the surveillance be stopped.
