A gun control group filed a lawsuit Thursday accusing the Justice Department of aiding gun manufacturers in skirting assault weapons laws.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (search), along with the Million Mom March (search), said the Justice Department's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed gun makers to replace the housing for the firing mechanism on legally owned semiautomatic assault weapons, which the groups say violates the 1994 Assault Weapon Act (search).
Brady
Recently, the Brady Bunch filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, alleging that they had illegally given permission to Bushmaster to manufacture "assault weapons" while the assault weapons ban was in effect. This case is pretty much a publicity ploy. There are some important facts to have when trying to understand the case:
- Bushmaster asked permission to manufacture replacement parts
- BATFE granted permission to do so using existing procedures for non-assault-weapons
- This exchange took place during the Clinton Administration, hardly a pro-gun environment
In other words, the Brady Bunch were expecting the assault weapons ban to result in the eventual elimination of the banned weapons, since they would eventually wear out, and they are angry that their attempt was foiled. Not that it was very smart in the first place; well-made and properly cared for firearms can easily remain in functional condition for decades if not centuries.
