President Bush creates the American SS...
President Bush on Wednesday directed the creation of a new National Security Service within the FBI, one of 70 recommendations on improving the intelligence community he endorsed from the White House WMD commission.OK, so I left out a letter. But it still strikes me as incredibly poor public-relations thinking to create a security agency with that acronym. The only reason I can think of to do that is, well, if he wants the left to compare him to Hitler, on the theory that the more often they do that the crazier they look. More details from CNN. I confess I had to ask myself whether it was April 1st before I believed the story. I mean... what politician in their right mind would possibly create a new three-letter agency with the same acronym as the Nazi SS? In other announcements, he wants to extend the duration of surveillance orders for non-US persons in espionage cases. Unlike 90% of the Patriot Act bullshit, that change actually makes sense; it's limited, reasonable, and makes it easier to mount extended counterintelligence operations. Hat tip to PoliTech for the story. UPDATE: Assuming, of course, that the proposals in the "other announcements" actually resemble the summaries! |
